CLIOHWORLD Fourth Plenary Conference and working meeting

Oulu 4-5 June 2010
Dear CLIOHWORLD partners, Dear Friends,
As you know, our next CLIOHWORLD Plenary Conference and Working Meeting will be held in Oulu, Finland, where Seija Jalagin is busy preparing for our visit. The dates, as announced in Pisa, are 4-5 June (arrival 3 June, departure 6 June). We are very much looking forward to our meeting – just a tiny bit south of the Arctic Circle – and in early June there will certainly be some “White Nights”, and we will be able to enjoy the long northern evenings.
The general theme of the meeting, as stated in our application, is “History of Globalisation and Globalisation of History”. We will send you the programme as soon as it is ready. The meeting will follow our general format of presentations, round table and discussions on the morning of 4 June; working sessions for the WGs on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, and a closing plenary, with reports, discussion and decision-making on Saturday afternoon.
We ask you to please make your travel arrangements, doing your best to find economical solutions.
We are aware that it is not easy to get to Oulu cheaply, but please do your best, because as you know CLIOHWORLD is not wealthy.
Here below is some information on logistics from Seija:
The flight companies operating Oulu are:
- Finnair
- Blue1
- SAS (Scandinavian Airlines)
- Air Baltic
The first three fly to Oulu from Helsinki, Air Baltic flies directly from Riga. Ryanair flies to Tampere where it takes 4½ to 5½ hours by train to Oulu (costs about 63 EUR oneway). Train from Helsinki to Oulu takes from 5½ to 7 hours and costs about 76 EUR, night train with cabin and bed around 100 EUR.
Therefore, I recommend flying. (The city tourist website mentions Wingo flight company but that flies merely between Tampere and Oulu and is expensive and does not operate on Sundays.)

We ourselves (Kathy, Laura and Lilla) have found that the cheapest solution from Pisa is to go to Milan Malpensa by car and fly to Oulu from there by Finnair. Please examine all options.
